Action Scuba diver is running the NYC Marathon for Project AWARE

As you all know, no cause is closer to our hearts at Action Scuba than Project AWARE (www.projectaware.org). That is why we are thrilled that one of our Mater Scuba Divers (and potential future Divemaster…) has been chosen as the only Canadian on the Project AWARE team for the New York City Marathon. On November 2nd, 2014, Kim Bell will be running 26.2 miles (42.2 KM) to raise funds to promote the importance of shark conservation and to fight marine debris. Please help Kim with her fund raising efforts by donating at the following website www.crowdrise.com/kimberlybell3. Also, keep a look out for some exciting fundraising events coming soon!

Action Scuba teams up with X-Men

Who do X-Men turn to when they need help underwater? Answer: The team at Action Scuba!

The newest X-Men film, Days of Future Past, opens today, and we’re pleased to say that when the movie was filming last year in Montreal, the producers turned to Action Scuba to supply their scuba equipment and expertise for the underwater scenes. Even Hollywood knows where to find the best choice for local scuba. :)

A number of our staff, including Gary Davis, Eric Villeneuve, Jason Xenakis and Stephane Laverne, were even called upon to jump in the water with the Hollywood cast. Look for their cameo on screen! (although you might not recognize them in their covert black scuba gear)

Join us for a viewing of the new X-Men movie on Thursday, May 29 and hear firsthand from our team what it was like to work with the X-Men team. Is Hugh Jackman as nice as they say he is? (yes!)

(oui !)

Suunto Dive Computer Sale – half price transmitters!

The 2014 dive season is just around the corner, so it’s time to start thinking about getting your dive gear ready. And one of the most important pieces of dive gear is your dive computer.

Suunto half price transmitter with air integrated dive computer

If you don’t own one already, it might be time to invest. And if you do have one already, it might be time to upgrade, because we’re offering a fantastic deal on air integrated computers from Suunto. Buy one, and get the wireless transmitted for half price. That’s a savings of more than $230!

What’s an air integrated dive computer, and why do I want one?

An air integrated computer has two parts. First, the dive computer itself that you wear on your wrist that provides all the information about your No Decompression Limit, depth, dive time, and much,  much more. Some can even act as a compass and manage multiple gases or support rebreathers.

The second part is a transmitter that attaches to your first stage regulator. This transmitter reads the pressure from your tank and wirelessly transmits the pressure reading to your dive computer on a real time basis. This gives you your exact air pressure, down to the last PSI, as you breathe, right on your wrist.

Once you use one, you won’t want to go back to the gauge, although you’ll likely still keep one on your regulator as a back up. (We love redundancy in diving!)

And for 3 days only, we’re offering this great deal to help get you ready for the summer!

Drop by and see us and we’ll help you find the perfect dive computer.

Offer valid from March 21-23, 2014 on in stock merchandise, so hurry in while supplies last.

Is it time for a scuba diving refresher?

As scuba instructors, we often hear people say “I’m a certified diver, but I haven’t dove in years. I did my course and then life got in the way”. You yourself may even have said these very words. In fact, it’s more common than you might think.

Does this mean that you can never dive again? Of course not! In fact, we really hope that you WILL dive again, because 70% of the planet is just waiting to be explored!

Maybe you learned to dive for a particular trip, perhaps a honeymoon, and then didn’t have an opportunity to get out and dive again. Or perhaps you learned with a significant other, and then that relationship ended.

Whatever the case, we think it’s time to get back in the water and enjoy scuba diving again. We’re pretty sure you’ll remember what made you want to learn in the first place!

So how do you get back into scuba diving after being out of it for a few years? Well, the good news is that your PADI certification card does not expire. That means you don’t have to take the beginner course all over again.

However, we don’t recommend just grabbing a tank and jumping in. Scuba diving is as safe as you make it, and we think your skills should be fresh in order to be safe.

That’s why we offer a Scuba Review course, which is a nice, fun afternoon scuba refresher in the pool, right here in Montreal. You’ll work with a PADI professional and go through all the skills you learned as a new diver to make sure you are comfortable in the water. You’ll rebuild your confidence in diving, and then you’ll be all set for your next vacation!

If you own your own scuba equipment but it’s been gathering dust in the basement, we also recommend you bring it in for service, even if you haven’t used it since the last service. There are things like rubber o-rings that can dry out and crack, even if unused, which could put your dive in jeopardy.

So put aside whatever is holding you back from diving, and come blow bubbles with us!
